Lessons from the Greek Cypriot – Turkish Cypriot experience
LAH organised a workshop on October 20, 2013 in collaboration with the Centre for Lebanese Studies, the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (Cyprus), the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Media Studies at the American University of Beirut, and Notre Dame University. The workshop entitled “Historical Thinking: An approach for teaching history in conflict areas-Lessons from the Greek Cypriot – Turkish Cypriot experience” explored the following questions: how can we, as educators, transform our history education classrooms to encourage students to think historically? What challenges do we face and how can we address them?
Participants had the opportunity to work in groups exercising what does it means to implementing a history lesson that focuses on historical thinking. They were also invited to discuss possibilities and challenges of adopting historical thinking as an approach for learning and teaching history in Lebanon.
The workshop was facilitated by Rana Zincir Celal, Dr. Chara Makriyianni and Dr. Meltem Onurkan Samani from the AHDR who shared their experience in shifting towards historical thinking in various dimensions of history. This event was attended by a group of history teachers, historians and academics interested in teaching history in Lebanon.
